A new poll reveals that Fred Thompson is in the lead in South Carolina. However, at this point, it is a really tight race. Fred has 18%, to Giuliani’s 16% and Romney’s 16%. Obviously, it is still a tight race. I think that SC could be a huge state for Fred. It comes on January 19th. It is VERY early (the 3rd primary state – along with Nevada on the same day).
If Fred can show that he can win in the South, it creates a new game. I think – at that point – the dynamics would be shifted. If Fred can win in SC, I think he can win a solid South. And, that will be very important, considering that Romney and Giuliani will both be battling for Northeastern states.
If I were Fred’s campaign, at this point, I wouldn’t worry too much about the Northeast… focus exclusively on the South and the Midwest… and let the rest of the chips fall into place. The key for Fred is South Carolina and the momentum that he can generate from a win, there. He MUST win South Carolina and a win 2 weeks later in Florida sure would be helpful.
