Frist Wins Straw Poll and may the be Republican candidate in 2008

Well, it appears that Dr. Frist did very well at the SRLC.  And, from those who went, it seems like everyone had a great time.  But, for those of us with toddlers, we don’t get out very much!  So, I will have to rely on the accounts by others.  I have to admit I am a little skeptical about Senator Frist’s showing in the straw poll.  Although I admire his loyalty to President Bush, I fear that he is too easy of a target for the Democrats at this point.  His attachment to the President and the President’s sagging numbers is becoming a liability that he needs to overcome in order for him to be a viable candidate.  At the same time, I see no clear leader.  John McCain clearly has the most name recognition.  But, he has no spine, no ideology.  And, in the end he is out for an army of one – himself.  I must admit that I am interested in learning more about Romney and George Allen.  Although, it would be fantastic to have a President from Tennessee.  As I have talked to numerous Republicans about this race, a lot of folks express concern with Frist’s lack of the intangibles.  Frist is the most impressive member of the Senate, clearly.  But, does he have the charisma to connect with people?  That remains to be seen.  And, in the information age – when people have the opportunity to see candidates countless times per day if they want – intangibles have growing importance.  I like Senator Frist a lot.  I think he is a tremendous leader.  Perhaps, I am reading into something too much.  Maybe, his handlers should just let him “be himself” and not be so scripted.  I can’t put my finger on it.  I would be interested in hearing the comments of others.
