New g-mail is a disaster!

6 November, 2007 (14:53) | Google | By: Phil Ayres

Luckily, Google has not plagued me with the new g-mail, yet.  But, a friend of mine showed me his account.  It slowed his e-mail down to a snail’s pace.  Has that happened to anyone else?  You can hardly navigate around his account.

Anyone seen the Google car?

16 October, 2007 (13:36) | Google | By: Phil Ayres

Yes, in case you didn’t know, Google cars are going around the country taking pictures of streets for Google Maps.  Although Google Maps is not showing that Google has hit anywhere in Tennessee, I was wondering if anyone had seen them, yet.

Funny thing … I know someone who actually saw the Google car and had their picture taken … he is on Google maps for his street in Chicago.

Is Google Phone on the horizon?

24 August, 2007 (12:37) | Google | By: Phil Ayres

Sources say that a Google phone could be launched within 2 weeks.  There definitely could be a hole in the market for Google here.  This phone is rumored to be at 3G speed… which would be much faster than iPhone.  Most of my friends who have an iPhone have complained about the network and its Internet capabilities.

With Google, you can now defend yourself online

9 August, 2007 (07:34) | Google | By: Phil Ayres

Tennessee politicians, heed. From now on, when a reporter writes a scathing story of you, you can respond… what you always wanted.

That’s right. Google News now gives you the functionality to be able to send a comment to a story that will appear in coordination with that story. This is great. It allows you to present your side of the story. I see this as being an added and important task for campaigns, in particular. If this functionality “sticks”, I think that it will become increasingly important for campaigns to respond to a press release or Google News story, as quickly as possible. Campaigns will be pressured to respond quickly before a press release that hits Google News becomes a story in the local paper - to enable the campaign to get “its own” message out.

Although, I do feel sorry for the legions of staffers who will have to “man the Google News wires” all night long, to make sure that a press release gets responded to and the comment gets included - before the story is circulated further.

I think that their motto should be:

“Google - Adding Greater Complexity to an Already Complex World”.

Microsoft Merger with Yahoo

4 May, 2007 (09:39) | Microsoft, Yahoo, Google | By: Phil Ayres

Apparently, Microsoft and Yahoo have entered into negotiations to discuss either cooperation or merger.  No doubt, this is in reaction to the fact that Microsoft continues to lose market share to Google, in search.  Meanwhile, Yahoo only continues to tread water.

This is a huge departure from the rumors that have been refuted, in the past, concerning a possible merger.

Bottom line, both companies continue to lose to Google.  And, with recent earnings disappointments, Yahoo is really scrambling to make something happen.  I am sure that Google’s acquisition of Doubleclick, a few weeks ago, only drove both companies, further, into panic mode.

As disorganized as the Microsoft AdCenter product is, I can only imagine what a cluster #$#$ a merger between these two giants would cause.  I truly believe that a merger would make Google even more powerful, as these two giant companies try to figure out how to work together.

My Advice to Companies Facing Hate Sites — the case of RSA Homes

26 April, 2007 (08:13) | search engine optimization, seo, Google Rank, lawsuits, Google | By: Phil Ayres

Will companies ever learn?  So, now RSA Homes, a New Jersey company, has filed suit against Google because someone did a page on ripoffreport.com and it is ranking on the first page for “RSA Homes”.  You know what… just for that stupidity, I am going to link to that page….. here’s my little PR4 coming atcha’!  j/k.  Anyway, if anyone learned ANYthing from the Katherine Coble situation (see, I did it again), it is that companies, in these situations, cannot simply do what they have done in the past.  Some things cannot be resolved in court (and, yes, I am a lawyer, by trade!)

Instead of throwing a fit and filing suit, thereby, effectively, causing your situation to become worse…go get links!  Now, why will matters get worse by going on the attack?  OK, at the time I heard about this, this ripoffreport page was on the first page for the search term “RSA Homes”, on Google.  Well, after this case is discussed 100 times over by bloggers like me, likely, it will eventually catapult to #1.  Don’t draw attention to the situation.  Businesses, listen, the Internet operates by the “Law of the Playground”… “Don’t let anyone know that anything is bothering you.”  When you were a kid and other kids picked on you and called you “fatty”, “four eyes”, etc. (I was the former - rather than the latter), it helped to just ignore the situation.  Why?  Because when you “confront” and let someone know it bothers you, your problems compound…. Aaaaah, the bully knows what to do to really piss you off.

OK, MOST bloggers are not bullies.  But, the power of linking remains a close analogy, nevertheless.  Google was founded by academics.  In the academic world, the more a paper is cited, the more credibility that paper has.  Thus, in Google, today, basically, the more a site is linked to, the higher it will be ranked.  (That is a very simplistic presentation of a very complex and mysterious Google Algorithm that encompasses many factors other than linking.)

But, bottom line, don’t think that you can “take on Google in court” and win and get that awful site accusing you of doing all manner of ridiculous things removed.  You will lose.  This has been tried in court.  And - guess what - others have lost.  I would give companies facing hate sites and criticism pages the same advice I would give my daughter if someone is bullying her.  Ignore it.  Don’t let them know it bothers you.  Don’t write letters.  Letters get published online… and linked to.  Just, ignore the person or criticism.  I have even heard lawyers at CLEs give bad advice on this subject.  Lawyers are not, generally, e-commerce experts.  They tell you to write letters, demanding that the parties “cease and desist”.  Say no to that advice.  Lawyers will only get you into trouble here.  Apparently, RSA Homes listened to their lawyers.  Bad advice.   But, rather, get links to in order to do away with that critical page.

Look, if a page is ranking highly for something like your company’s name or even your name, clearly, you are ranking poorly because of a faulty linking strategy.  Go write articles and submit them to ezinearticles or even host them on your site.  Go get other companies to link to you.  Do press releases.  Do anything.  But, whatever you do, don’t dignify the person or group who is attacking you.  THAT is stupid.
