The Twitter experiment actually did pretty well

In case you read, yesterday, I blogged about how someone was using Twitter to see if he could predict the results of Iowa quicker than the media.  Turns out that this little experiment faired pretty well.  Shortly before 7:30, he was able to conclude that…

Based on my informal count, about 20 Twitter users were positioned at
caucuses throughout the state reporting results, with more reporting in
through email and text messages. Thanks to these early tweets, very
early on, we were able to see a strong reservoir of support for Barack
Obama that it was clear would be difficult for Clinton and Edwards to
overcome.

Very interesting.  Finally, a use for Twitter.  I have been trying to get into it.  But, I am just not finding it to be very effective - because, hardly any of my friends do it.  It would be like owning a fax machine with nobody to fax to.

Twittering your kid’s birth

Alright, I LOVE technology.  I live it.  I breathe it.  But, there comes a point where your zest for technology can go too far.  One example arises when you “twitter your kid’s birth“.

That will make a great story (or not).  Years down the road… “hey, little Johnny, your daddy wasn’t helping me during your birth because he was too busy TWITTERING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” on his Blackberry.

Twitter annoys me anyway.  Is it really important that people know when you are hitting the head?  Or playing solitaire?  Or taking a smoke break?  I don’t get it.  But, fortunately, I feel that it is just a passing fad.  Or, is it?  Are there any Twitterers out there? … or people who would admit to it?

Twitter this!!!

So, Britney’s “On Air” piece today is about Twitter.  Yes, it is a phenomenon.  Yes, there seem to be about a half billion people doing it…. and, yes, I sat mesmerized on a Friday night two weeks ago watching “Twittervision”… that is www.twittervision.com.  (For those of you who don’t know what it is, twittervision is a mash-up of what everyone is “twittering” about … world-wide… you know exciting things like …. “going to bed”, “really drunk… hang-over to follow”, “writing a paper, flunking a class”.)

In watching twittervision, I suppose I was more or less intrigued by the idea that people were all over the world “twittering” as I was watching it.  It does really hit home as you are watching this how connected the web makes us.

BUT, while social media is cool, I guess… there are some things that I do not need to know about or even care about ever knowing.  E.g., my friend Walt in Atlanta may say “going to the bathroom… will be back”…. I don’t need to know that.  But, as you “twitter”, you will find that this is what a lot of these posts are… “broke up with girlfriend… eating a sandwich”.  Alright, fantastic.  Thanks.

Like I said, the Internet is great for bringing us together.  But, do we really need to be that together?  I don’t have the need to know what my BFF (Since I am a 32-year old man, I don’t have BFFs… and if I did, I wouldn’t call them that!) is doing at the moment.
I am not a twitterer.  I guess I should give it a shot… so the world can know when I am “changing my daughter’s diaper”, “stuffing my face with Fig Newtons”, or “mowing the grass”… you know … really important stuff like that.  Alright, my wonderful readers, I am “going to the bathroom” right now… but, I guess you really didn’t want to know that, or did you?
