Fulmer apparently going nowhere

18 June, 2008 (08:13) | Tennessee News, Vol Football | By: Phil Ayres

I don’t understand it.  Apparently, we are stuck with Fulmer for a long time.   And, the word on the street is that Fulmer is about to get a 7 year extension.  When you give that guy a 7 year extension, that is like just throwing up your hands and saying… we are cool with mediocrity.

This program has done nothing but decline since 1998.  Where will the Vols be after a 7 year extension?  How depressing.

Ainge is pathetic and Fulmer is worse

1 December, 2007 (22:00) | Vol Football | By: Phil Ayres

Well, I have to say that today was one of my biggest disappointments as a Vol fan.

All in all, it was a pathetic performance.  Although the defense played a little better than they have played in most games, this season.

And, I have to say, that I am delighted to be done with Ainge.  He has been over-rated from day 1.  Everyone always had high hopes for him.  But, he is no better today than he was 2 years ago.  He is still making stupid decisions and egregious mistakes – mistakes that a 4 years starter should not make.  And, I beyond laughed when an announcer during the game suggested that Ainge could be a 2nd round draft pick.  Laughable.  Ainge couldn’t even be a ball boy in the NFL.  Tee Martin was 10 times the QB Ainge is… and how did his NFL career go.

Tennessee is 0-3 in its SEC Championship games this century.  And, yet, for some ungodly reason, Tennessee is talking about extending Fulmer’s contract.  If his name were Johnny Majors, the administration would be talking about canning him.  Pathetic.  Next to Saban, I believe Fulmer is the highest paid coach in the SEC … and for what?  He is slowly destroying the program.  Wake up.

Fulmer on the hot seat — “it’s time for you to GO!!!!!”

9 November, 2007 (12:40) | Vol Football | By: Phil Ayres

Great article today on ESPN.com about Fulmer being on the hot seat.  The tide against the great obese one has grown the last couple of years.  I do think the voices are getting louder.  Even people who I know have been huge defenders of Fulmer (JCD for one… you know who you are.) have now turned against him.

It is time for Fulmer to go.  We have been in stagnation since 1998.  How many years can you coast on a National Championship?  With disgraceful losses and progressively worse recruiting classes… does anyone honestly think it is going to get better?

So, what?  Let’s say this team makes it to Atlanta… can they win?  Because, that is really what matters… it is not about a winning season in Knoxville… it is about playing for a National Championship or playing your way into the BCS… unless Fulmer does that… this should be it for him!  Buy him out, and let’s do for football what Bruce Pearl has done for basketball in Knoxville.

The undoing of the Tennessee Volunteers

16 September, 2007 (11:53) | Vol Football | By: Phil Ayres

I was ashamed of yesterday’s performance – as a lifelong Vol fan.  Worst loss since 1981.  I didn’t realize that until I read the Tennessean today.  I knew it had to be the worst loss in the Fulmer era.

I don’t have much to say about yesterday – except, it was pathetic.  Pathetic performance by the players… and a typically pathetic performance by old coaches who have no originality, creativity, or even skill.

This is the beginning of the end for the Vols – unless they fire Fulmer and his merry band of nursing home patient/coaches.  Fire Fulmer for God sakes… we have been a steady decline since 1998.

Randy Sanders was the sacrificial lamb two years ago.  Is Fulmer going to be thrown to the wolves, this time?  I sure hope so.

My Vol-Cal afterthoughts

4 September, 2007 (11:53) | Vol Football | By: Phil Ayres

Like the rest of the Vol nation, I was ready for Saturday night… but ended up being not too disappointed.  Bottom line, we just got beat by a better team.

But, rather than focusing on the loss, I think we can focus on the positives:

First, Ainge!  Wow, what a difference a year makes.  He is finally in control of his head and this team.  He is finally ready to lead.  I was so impressed with him… 271 yards, no INTs, one fumble that was not really his fault all with a broken finger.  Outstanding.

Second, the receiving corps… I was glad to see them spread the ball around…4 receivers with more than 5 catches.

And, I was glad to see the defense settle down and recover.  They flat out “sucked” the first half … but, they got better as they game progressed.

I don’t think the Vols beat themselves… and so often – when they lose… I feel that way… and, that makes the week difficult to stomach.  But, we were defeated by one of the top two or three teams in the country.  And, that softens the blow.  My hat is off to Cal.

Let’s don’t forget about next week on our way to the Gators!
