There may be some “method” to Fred Thompson’s delay

Stuart Rothenberg made a great point, discussing why a Thompson delay may make sense…

Thompson’s announcement about whether he will make the race could come at any time, though nothing appears to be imminent. He actually may be better off delaying his entry until around the Iowa Straw Poll in August, bypassing an event that maximizes the importance of organization, which he doesn’t have and probably can’t create in a few months.

After reading this, I can certainly see the logic in delaying.  The Straw Poll builds momentum for a campaign.  Maybe, Fred Thompson agrees with Rothenberg.  But, I don’t completely buy this argument.

As I have been saying, the sooner the better.  Fred needs to jump into this race with both feet… not continue to “wade in the water”.  I truly believe that if he got in this race today, he would have a lot of foot soldiers in Iowa.  People are looking for an alternative.  It is April.  If he gets in today, I think that he could have a great showing in August.  But, the cost of delaying, fundraising-wise, is simply too high.
