Yep, McCain made a lot of mistakes. But, so did Republicans, in general. They picked the wrong candidate.

Beyond just social media President Elect Obama used an entire new media strategy to pull off the land slide. I had a feeling the next president would be a podcaster. He had his message everywhere. YouTube, mobile alerts, every myspace spinoff site, podcasts, and (my favorite) viral internet content. First there was Obama girl, then the Yes We Can music video, and then therealmccain.com videos. He harnessed the energy of people who can't help emailing funny pictures to everybody. My favorite was the McCain tongue photoshop contest (http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2008/10/photoshop-conte.html)
An unsung hero in all this would be the FightTheSmears.com Every time I got a stupid email telling me that Obama played basketball instead of visiting the troops or that he was a "muzlum" I would "reply all" with the link to that exact topic on fightthesmears.com

Which leads me to another point about how weak the attacks against President Elect Obama were. "We don't know nothin' 'bout this guy!!" Uh, hi. Are you living under a rock? Have you not the google, or the youtubes, or even the internets? What do you want to know about him, I can look it up on my phone while we're standing here talking. Also, beating your chest about how you're more experienced than your opponent and then picking a running mate whom no one has ever heard of in their entire fucking life isn't the best strategy in world.

Well put, Phil. I agree that Obama did a masterful job leveraging social media to grow and nurture his base, but it all starts with a compelling vision for the future. Obama was a much better marketer than McCain. Marketing today is about spreading ideas effectively. Obama's message went viral. People loved him. Even though he got called on the carpet for using phrases like "spreading the wealth" and "selfish" to justify his taxing philosophy, it didn't matter because his supporters were so engulfed with Obama-mania, an attack on him was an attack on them.
